Seasons at Northern Ontario & Manitoulin

What to expect across the golf season.

Spring

Northern Ontario's golf season typically opens in early to mid-May, though courses on and around Manitoulin Island can remain wet well into the month as snowmelt works through the ground. Conditions in May tend to be cool, with daytime temperatures in the low to mid-teens Celsius and occasional frost overnight. Fairways are soft and greens can be slow while turf recovers, but the landscape rewards early-season visitors with dramatic transitions β€” bare birch and poplar filling in with fresh green, and Lake Huron still holding its cold-season clarity. Shoulder-season rates and quiet tee sheets are common draws. Travelers planning a spring visit should pack layers and expect variable conditions; waterproof footwear is practical rather than optional. The ferry crossing to Manitoulin from Tobermory does not resume spring service until late May, so travelers arriving via that route should confirm schedules before planning an early-season trip. Highway 17 access from Sudbury remains reliable year-round.

Summer

July and August represent the heart of the playing season across this trail. Daytime temperatures typically settle between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius, with lower humidity than southern Ontario, making for comfortable walking rounds. Extended daylight at this latitude allows for late tee times well into the evening. Manitoulin Island, the world's largest freshwater island, draws considerable summer tourism, so booking tee times and accommodation at Rainbow Ridge Golf Course in Manitowaning in advance is advisable during peak weeks in late July and August. The surrounding region offers strong off-course appeal: fishing, hiking in Killarney Provincial Park, and exploring the island's Indigenous cultural heritage. Northeastern Ontario summers can include afternoon thunderstorms, particularly in late July, so morning rounds are a practical choice. Course conditions are typically at their firmest and fastest during this window.

Fall

September and the first half of October offer some of the most pleasant playing conditions on this trail. Temperatures cool into the mid-teens, rounds move efficiently in the quieter shoulder season, and the boreal and mixed-forest landscape surrounding both courses turns vivid shades of orange, red, and yellow. Fall colour along Highway 6 on Manitoulin and through the Canadian Shield corridors approaching Northeastern Ontario typically peaks between late September and early October. Courses generally remain open into mid-October, though early frosts can arrive by late September and morning rounds may require waiting for greens to thaw. Visitor traffic drops sharply after Labour Day, meaning more accessible tee times and often reduced green fees. Travelers should note that the Chi-Cheemaun ferry between Tobermory and South Baymouth closes for the season in mid-October, so routing plans should account for that cutoff.
