7-Day Golf Road Trip: Northumberland Shore

This seven-day road trip traces the Northumberland Shore from the Cumberland County gateway at Amherst east through Pugwash and Wallace, finishing near Antigonish on Nova Scotia's Sunrise Trail. The routing pairs parkland openers with two of the province's most celebrated coastal layouts — Northumberland Links and Fox Harb'r Resort — before swinging inland for a closing stretch through Pictou and Antigonish counties. Warm Northumberland Strait water keeps summers mild and the fairways generous with season. Seven courses, six nights, one unbroken highway.

Day 1

Arrive in Amherst mid-afternoon and check in to Comfort Inn Amherst or, for more character, Super 8 by Wyndham Amherst NS. A late-afternoon nine isn't on the cards today — use the evening to get oriented and grab dinner at Teazer's Pub & Eatery or The Old Warehouse Cafe and Lounge, both in town. Review the week's tee times and confirm bookings for Fox Harb'r, where advance reservations are essential. Amherst sits at the Trans-Canada gateway to the Sunrise Trail, making it the logical staging point for the road trip ahead.

Day 2

Tee off early at Amherst Golf Club, an 18-hole, par-71 parkland layout designed by Robbie Robinson. A morning start keeps pace of play manageable and leaves the afternoon free for the drive east along Route 366 toward the Northumberland shore. The course plays through mature trees and rewards straight driving. After the round, check out and head to Pugwash, roughly an hour east. Check in to Inn the Elms or Hillcrest View Inn, both in the village. Dinner at MacFarlane Lantern Restaurant in Pugwash is worth the short walk from either property.

Day 3

Northumberland Links is the centrepiece of Day 3. This William G. Robinson–designed par-72 links sits on the Pugwash shore and earns its signature designation with exposed seaside holes and Northumberland Strait views throughout. Book a mid-morning tee time to catch the morning light before any afternoon breeze builds. Post-round, the clubhouse restaurant — The Tap Inn at Northumberland Links — is the obvious choice for lunch or a pint. Stay a second night in Pugwash at Hillcrest View Inn or Inn the Elms and rest ahead of Fox Harb'r day.

Day 4

Drive west from Pugwash to Wallace — roughly 20 minutes — for the week's marquee round at Fox Harb'r Resort. Graham Cooke's par-72 resort course sits inside the Fox Harb'r property and is the only way to access the layout; guests staying on-site have priority tee times. Check in to Fox Harb'r Resort the night before if possible, or plan arrival the morning of and book the earliest available slot. The course hugs Northumberland Strait shoreline on several holes and demands accurate iron play. Dinner at Willard at Fox Harb'r or Wiley's by the Wharf in Wallace rounds out what should be the trip's strongest day.

Day 5

A second night at Fox Harb'r Resort allows a relaxed morning before checking out and driving east toward Pictou County. Abercrombie Country Club in New Glasgow is a par-71 parkland track with design credits shared by C. E. Robbie Robinson, Graham Cooke, and Robert Moote — a rare collaborative pedigree. Aim for a late-morning tee time after the highway drive from Wallace. New Glasgow offers practical options for an overnight stay, though the itinerary continues east the following day, so a simple roadside property near town serves the purpose.

Day 6

Day 6 brings two options in the Antigonish area: Antigonish Golf & Country Club and Antigonish Golf Club. The Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole, par-72 parkland course co-designed by Robert Moote and Ian Andrew, and represents the more polished layout of the two. Tee off mid-morning at Antigonish Golf & Country Club and consider an afternoon round or a walk at Antigonish Golf Club if energy allows. Both courses are in Antigonish, keeping logistics simple. An overnight in town holds the final travel day short.

Day 7

The final full day of golf lands at Glen Lovat Golf Club in Frasers Mountain, an 18-hole, par-72 layout that offers a quieter, rural close to the trip before departure. Clyde River Golf Club in Clyde River — a Robert Moote par-72 resort design — is an alternative if routing back toward the Trans-Canada suits the drive home. Play a morning round, pack the car at the turn, and head to the highway. The Northumberland Shore circuit covers eight courses across six days of golf, from the New Brunswick border east to Antigonish County, with the strait visible on the best days from half a dozen fairways.
