Northumberland Links

Northumberland Links sits on the southern shore of the Northumberland Strait in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, roughly equidistant between Amherst and Pictou along the Trans-Canada corridor. Opened originally as a 9-hole layout in 1964, the course was redesigned and expanded to 18 holes by William G. Robinson in 1988. More recent renovations by architect Christine Fraser have sharpened its links identity. SCOREGolf has ranked it among the top 30 public courses in Canada.

At 6,601 yards from the tips, the par-72 layout blends tree-lined inland holes with open, wind-exposed stretches that look out over the Strait. Atlantic breezes are a constant factor here — the kind that can turn a straightforward iron shot into a genuine puzzle — and learning to read the wind is as important as reading the greens. Those greens are bentgrass, fast, and on the smaller side, rewarding precise approach play over power.

The 13th, dubbed "Lobster Pot," is the course's signature par-3 and one of its most photographed holes. A renovated layout gives it unobstructed views of the Northumberland Strait, and the exposure to wind makes club selection genuinely unpredictable from one round to the next.

Northumberland Links suits golfers who appreciate a course that demands course management and shot-shaping over raw distance. Pugwash itself is a small saltwater village best known historically for its Thinkers' Lodge and the Pugwash Conferences on world affairs — a quieter destination than the golf hubs of Cape Breton, but one worth the detour for a links round on one of Nova Scotia's most consistently recognized public layouts.
