Northumberland Links

Northumberland Links sits on the shore of the Northumberland Strait in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, and has been a fixture of Maritime golf since its opening as a 9-hole layout in 1964. William G. Robinson redesigned and expanded the course to a full 18-hole championship track in 1988, producing a par-72 layout that stretches 6,601 yards. SCOREGolf has ranked it among the top 30 public courses in Canada.

The course blends two distinct personalities: tree-lined inland holes give way to open links-style terrain where the Strait comes into view and Atlantic winds become a factor in club selection. Bentgrass greens run fast and small throughout, placing a premium on approach accuracy. Recent renovations by golf course architect Christine Fraser have worked to strengthen the links character of the layout. The par-3 13th, known locally as 'Lobster Pot,' is the course's signature hole — a renovated short iron with direct views over the Strait that encapsulates the coastal setting.

The combination of two different hole styles means the course suits a range of players, though those unfamiliar with links conditions — firm turf, variable winds, and greens that don't hold approach shots the way parkland surfaces do — will find the exposed stretches a useful challenge. Golfers who enjoy reading the wind as a fifth club will feel at home here.

Pugwash is a small harbour town on Nova Scotia's North Shore, best known for the Pugwash Peace Conferences and its Scottish heritage. The area is relatively unhurried, and the course pairs naturally with an overnight stay rather than a quick day trip from Halifax.
