7-Day Golf Road Trip: Cape Breton

Cape Breton's golf trail follows the natural arc of the island: south from Sydney through the Bras d'Or Lake shore, then north and around the famous Cabot Trail to the highlands courses at Ingonish. Seven days allows time to play every major layout without rushing, with Baddeck serving as a central base for the middle stretch. The driving between courses is scenic enough to count as part of the trip.

Day 1

Fly into Sydney or cross on the Canso Causeway and head straight to Membertou. Check into the Hampton Inn by Hilton Sydney and shake off the travel with an afternoon round at Seaview Golf & Country Club in North Sydney, a Robert Moote-designed par-71 parkland track that eases golfers in without overwhelming them. It's a practical warm-up before the more demanding layouts ahead. After the round, Governor's Pub & Eatery in Sydney is a reliable dinner option close to the hotel.

Day 2

Morning check-out from Sydney. Drive south along the Bras d'Or Lake shore to Ben Eoin and tee off mid-morning at The Lakes Resort Cape Breton, Graham Cooke's par-72 resort course set against the lake. The layout rewards precise iron play over power. After the round, continue west to West Bay and check into Dundee Resort & Golf Club for the night. The resort sits directly on the Bras d'Or, and the setting at dusk is worth arriving with enough daylight to see it.

Day 3

Stay put at Dundee and play Dundee Resort & Golf Club in the morning. The course wraps around the Bras d'Or shoreline at West Bay, making it one of the more visually distinctive parkland tracks on the island. An early tee time leaves the afternoon free to explore the lake by foot or simply rest at the resort. This is a deliberate slower day before the itinerary shifts north toward the Cabot Trail. Dinner is at the resort itself.

Day 4

Check out of Dundee and drive north to Baddeck, the trip's natural hub. Check into Inverary Resort on the Baddeck waterfront. The afternoon is open for a walkabout in Baddeck or a visit to the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site. No golf today — legs rest before two consecutive days of serious courses. Dinner at Lakeside Restaurant at Inverary Resort keeps things easy, or try Baddeck Lobster Suppers for a more local experience.

Day 5

Stay based in Baddeck. Drive north on the Cabot Trail to Cheticamp and play Le Portage Golf Club, a Robert and David Moote-designed par-72 parkland course with views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Tee off mid-morning to allow enough time for the drive back. The road through the highlands makes the round-trip worthwhile on its own. Return to Baddeck for the night — Inverary Resort again, or switch to Auberge Gisele's Inn or Lynwood Inn for variety. The Cable Room at The Telegraph House in Baddeck works well for dinner.

Day 6

This is the centrepiece day. Drive the Cabot Trail north and over the highlands to Ingonish Beach and play Highland Links, Stanley Thompson's par-72 links design widely regarded as one of the finest courses in Canada. Book the earliest available tee time — the course is busy in season and the round itself runs long on a links layout this size. The Purple Thistle Room at Keltic Lodge in Ingonish Beach is the natural dinner choice; it sits steps from the course. Stay at Lynwood Inn back in Baddeck or, if timing works, overnight closer to Ingonish and use Coastal Restaurant & Pub for an informal post-round meal.

Day 7

A final morning in Baddeck before heading to Sydney for departure. If the schedule allows an early tee time, Cape Breton Highlands Links in Ingonish Beach offers a last look at the highlands terrain before the drive south. Otherwise, the return route through the Cabot Trail interior is a worthwhile final hour of the trip. Drop the rental car in Sydney or catch the Canso Causeway west. Check out of whichever Baddeck property served as home base and allow two to three hours for the Sydney drive depending on routing.
