Le Portage Golf Club

Le Portage Golf Club sits along the celebrated Cabot Trail in Chéticamp, Nova Scotia, making it one of the more scenically situated public courses on Cape Breton Island. Opened in 1984 and designed by Robert and David Moote, the 18-hole layout stretches to 6,777 yards off the tips and plays to a par of 72.

The course blends a tree-lined parkland character with some open, links-style stretches — a combination that keeps the routing varied from hole to hole. Tee shots demand precision through corridors of trees, while the more exposed sections introduce wind as an additional factor, which is rarely in short supply on the Cabot Trail. Three holes have earned particular recognition among regulars: Hole 2, called Le Cap-Rouge; Hole 10, named Cheticamp; and Hole 17, La Père Fiset. The names themselves reflect the deep Acadian heritage of the surrounding community.

At just under 6,800 yards, Le Portage presents a genuine test for mid-to-low handicappers without becoming inaccessible for recreational players. The public green fees policy means visiting golfers can book a round without the hurdle of a private membership, making it a natural stop for road-trippers working their way around the Cabot Trail loop.

Chéticamp itself is a vibrant Acadian village on Cape Breton's western shore, known for its traditional music, seafood, and proximity to Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
