The Algonquin Golf Course

The Algonquin Golf Course sits on the shores of Passamaquoddy Bay in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, one of the oldest resort courses in Canada. First opened in 1894 and most recently redesigned by Rod Whitman, the course stretches to 7,135 yards from the tips and plays to a par 72 across 18 holes.

The layout offers two distinct personalities across its two nines. The front nine carries a parkland character, sheltered and tree-lined, while the back nine opens up into a links-influenced experience where the bay becomes a more constant presence and the wind more of a factor. Hole 12, a short par three, is widely regarded as an unofficial signature hole — its resemblance to the 7th at Pebble Beach owes to its seaside exposure and the demands it places on club selection.

At 7,135 yards, the course presents a genuine test for stronger players, though the variety in hole character — parkland transitions to links, calm to exposed — keeps rounds interesting across all skill levels. The resort setting means visitors have on-site accommodation options, making it a natural anchor for a longer stay in the region.

St. Andrews itself is one of New Brunswick's most historically intact towns, with a compact walkable downtown, significant Victorian-era architecture, and a working waterfront on Passamaquoddy Bay. The town sits near the Maine border at the tip of a peninsula, making it a practical stopping point for golfers routing through the Fundy coast or crossing into Atlantic Canada from New England.
